What is the difference between a review, an assessment, and troubleshooting?

Assessment

The purpose of a condition assessment is generally to gain an understanding of the existing network, determine the need for modernization, and prepare for the design phase. It may include visual inspections and measurements, but the level of detail in the documentation and evaluation is tailored to the objective of the task.

Troubleshooting and Repair

During troubleshooting, the cause of a specific symptom—such as tripping, overheating, flickering, or a partial power outage—is investigated. The goal is to identify and correct the fault, not necessarily to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the entire electrical system.

Electrical Safety Inspection

How should you prepare for the review?

  • the address, type, and intended use of the property;
  • the purpose of the review;
  • existing electrical plans and previous meeting minutes;
  • access to distribution points and metering points;
  • keys and access privileges;
  • a list of known issues and previous fixes;
  • data on larger or critical equipment;
  • the time windows during which the circuits can be turned off;
  • special restrictions arising from operations at a business location.

Certain parts of the inspection may require a power outage or a brief interruption in service; therefore, this must be coordinated in advance with both residents and businesses.

What can be included in the minutes?

The structure of the document depends on the type of study, but generally it may include:

  • the customer's and the location's details;
  • the purpose and scope of the investigation;
  • the system's main technical specifications;
  • the findings of the visual inspection;
  • the measurement results;
  • a list of the errors and discrepancies identified;
  • classification based on risk or urgency;
  • the necessary repairs and further inspections;
  • the limitations of the investigation and the areas that are inaccessible;
  • the reviewer's identification and authorization information, where necessary.

The report is most useful when it clearly distinguishes between defects requiring immediate action, planned fixes, and gaps in documentation.

What happens if they find an error?

The review identifies and documents discrepancies, but in many cases, correcting them is a separate phase of the work. The following steps may be taken:

  1. discontinuing the use of or isolating the part that poses an immediate danger;
  2. determining the exact technical nature of the error;
  3. preparing a proposal for repairs or upgrades;
  4. coordinating the necessary parts and access;
  5. performing the repair;
  6. re-inspection and documentation of the affected parts;
  7. additional or repeat review, if necessary.

The scope of the repair can range from replacing a faulty component to upgrading the entire circuit or distribution system.

What does an audit report not include?

  • This does not mean that the system cannot malfunction in the future.
  • This is not a substitute for regular maintenance and the investigation of abnormal signs.
  • It does not automatically verify the condition of parts that are outside the scope of the inspection and inaccessible.
  • It does not replace the separate design of new equipment or the manufacturer's specifications.
  • A system in which identified errors have not been corrected is not considered adequate.
  • It is not the same as any document intended for insurance, regulatory, or contractual purposes.

Should the inspection be done before or after the renovation?

Before a renovation, an inspection can help determine which parts can be retained, where replacements are needed, and what risks to anticipate. After construction, inspecting and documenting the new or modified system can provide a clear starting point for its use and future maintenance.

When is immediate action required?

Regardless of the date of the inspection, smoke, sparks, a burning odor, excessive heat, melted insulation, electrical components exposed to moisture, repeated tripping, or accessible, damaged conductive parts require immediate attention. If any of these conditions are observed, the affected equipment or circuit must not be used any further.
